THE WHITSUNDAYS

The Cumberland Group of Islands, or the Whitsundays as they are more commonly referred, lie close to the coast of Queensland, their limits marked on the mainland by the coastal towns of Mackay in the South and Bowen in the north. The route north from Mackay to Bowen is around 100 nautical miles through a tropical paradise in the heart of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. The magic of these islands, with their rocky shores, white sand and aquamarine and emerald waters, has been appreciated since they were first recorded in the history books of the 18th century, by Lieutenant James Cook – during his first voyage of discovery – on the Whit Sunday, in 1770.
